Alexa ranks Maktoob.com as the leading Arabic Internet service

Dubai: US-based Alexa.com, the highly renowned subsidiary of Amazon.com specializing in Internet rankings, has released the names of the top Arabic web sites, ranking Maktoob.com, the Arab world’s first free Arabic/English email provider, as the leading Arab web service.

Alexa.com, a top-rated web navigation tool, carried out a comprehensive independent survey amongst its users to find out the most popular 100,000 international web sites. In its findings for the Middle East, Maktoob.com was found to be the most visited Arabic site as of June 1, 2000, and was placed at the 2836th position in the world rankings, with Ayna following at the 2909th position. Other rank-holders from the Arab world include Arabia Online (5584th), Planetarabia (9104th) and Naseej (13923rd).

Alexa.com, which provides its users with a highly intelligent Internet navigation system, measured the visits to web sites for the past six months by millions of its registrants from all over the world. The results were then compiled and analyzed to compare performance of the various web services.

Samih Toukan, Managing Partner of Maktoob.com, said that the high ranking of his site by Alexa users showed that his organization had succeeded in achieving the high standards it had been striving for. “We at Maktoob.com are indeed excited by Alexa’s latest findings,” he enthused. “This endorsement from one of the world’s highly respected online service undoubtedly reinforces our position as a popular web destination for Internet users from across the Arab world.

With an overwhelming membership of 350,000 email users and many more people using its other services such as Maktoob Chat, Voice Mail, BBC Radio, Maktoob.com has grown in stature as the premier online community for Arab nationals worldwide.

Very soon, we will take our popularity to a new level by familiarizing our users with the potential of e-commerce for their business activities,” Toukan said. “At the same time, we are building up on the goodwill of the users by enhancing our Internet site with more state-of-the-art features.

The company recently tied up with MediaRing.com to offer Voice Mail services and with BBC to broadcast radio services on the net. Maktoob.com also offers a host of interactive services such as electronic greeting cards, business directories and Arabic music and information services.

Maktoob.com is the first Arabic/English web-based email solution and the leading virtual community for Arabs around the world. The service became an instant success when it was launched in October 1998.
