The Growth Of Online Advertising

Online advertising spend in the Middle East‚ although growing quickly‚ still represents only 1% of the region’s total advertising spending. Why is it taking clients and agencies so long to get on the online bandwagon? It’s not for a lack of an audience – with over 40 million Arab Internet users‚ the sheer numbers are certainly there. And it’s not because of questionable effectiveness – online advertising is a proven marketing tool worldwide – so much so in fact that in the UK alone‚ online advertising is already a $5.6 Billion industry‚ and it is set to overtake TV spending by the end of next year.

Given the real-world numbers in the region‚ there is no reason that online spend is not already closer to 5% of total spend‚ and the fact that it isn’t already has to do with the special dynamics of agencies and media in the region. Many clients complain that agencies are still not treating the Internet as a core part of their business and have failed to properly represent the medium’s unique targeting and relationship-building tools through creative strategy-driven online plans. But we on the media side also share part of the blame. The fact is that only very few regional Web publishers have the resources or tools necessary to go beyond basic banner campaigns to develop comprehensive branding experiences. In this atmosphere‚ clients have to take charge and be more demanding of both their agencies and online media. The same global successes can be replicated here‚ and we can already point to many Online wins where clients and agencies have had the foresight to take some risks and use Online effectively.
